Sabbatical

Sabbatical ~ a conscious pause

In the spring of 2017 I decided to take a sabbatical, it ended up lasting over a year.

It was the first time in nearly 20 years that I had taken a break from having an occupation of some form. Not only did I take a break from being employed, my husband and I also put the majority of our belongings into storage, moved out of our house of 7 years, and we didn’t have a firm plan of what we were going to do next or for how long.

For the first six months we travelled through the Pacific Northwest and Europe. The second half of the year we returned to settle on a small island in the Pacific Northwest. The house we stayed in was on the water, where we watched the weather and ourselves change.

For much of this time I was not on social media and did not have a cell phone plan. It was lovely.

Giving myself the time to reflect, heal and grow over that time was invaluable.

As my sabbatical began to draw to an end I was able to fully appreciate its value. I decided that I would not be commencing on another two decade chapter without a lengthy conscious pause. I am not sure when my next year long sabbatical will be, but I know I will be taking:

~ An hour sabbatical daily

~ A day long one monthly

~A weekend long one seasonly

~A week long one yearly

This will not be possible unless I am committed to this intention and carve out these lengths of time in my schedule.  For me it is worth it, as I know the benefits.
